The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant is little over a week away! On Sunday 3rd June 2012, over one thousand boats will muster on the River Thames. We now know which vessels will parade down the river and in what attire. The participant PDFs are here. But my favourite, as it was to be expected, is Matthew of Bristol! It’s a replica of a late 15th century caravel of which we know that voyaged at least once from Europe to North America. It’s 24m long and like any caravel of the time (Columbus’ Niña was a caravel), boasts four masts ready with square rigging, which is absolutely fascinating.
Needless to say that I will be covering the pageant on the day and be on the look out for the mastheads as they will be starting from Putney then breeze past Westminster, Waterloo and Tower Bridge. For now, though, a couple of a priori pictures.
